Dec 22, 2025 01:03 PM

In line with Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development’s commitment to advancing the healthcare sector across the governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and to contributing to the delivery of integrated and advanced medical services at university and public hospitals—which serve the largest possible number of citizens—the Foundation signed two Memoranda of Understanding with Sohag University and Tanta University, with a total value of EGP 75.5 million. This comes in response to the urgent need to upgrade medical and surgical services at these hospitals, which receive thousands of patients annually from Upper Egypt and the Delta.

The MoUs were signed by Mr. Essam El-Wakil, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development and Non-Executive Chairman of Banque Misr, with Prof. Hassan Hamdy Abdelrahman Noaman, President of Sohag University, and Prof. Mohamed Hussein Mahmoud, President of Tanta University, who delegated Prof. Mohamed Hantirah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of University Hospitals at Tanta University. The signing ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of leaders from the Foundation and both universities.

Under the MoU with Sohag University, Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development will provide EGP 48.5 million to equip the neonatal and intensive care wing at the New University Children’s Hospital. Under the MoU with Tanta University, the Foundation will provide EGP 15 million to complete the requirements for equipping the intensive care wing with approximately 15 ICU rooms at Tanta University International Teaching Hospitals, in addition to EGP 12 million to complete the development of the intensive care and operating wing by equipping 10 ICU beds and 3 operating rooms at the New Surgical Hospital at Tanta University. This support contributes to enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare sector in Sohag and Tanta and accelerates the delivery of healthcare services to patients.

In this context, Mr. Essam El-Wakeel emphasized the Foundation’s pioneering role in the field of social responsibility, particularly in supporting the healthcare system through backing university hospitals at Tanta and Sohag Universities, thereby enhancing the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.

Mr. El-Wakeel also expressed his pride in the partnership with both universities, which represents a clear model of joint cooperation in supporting the healthcare sector. He noted the Foundation’s continued implementation of health projects that effectively contribute to community development and the advancement of the medical sector, reaffirming the Foundation’s full readiness to support and develop healthcare services provided to citizens through all available means.

Prof. Hassan El-Nomany, President of Sohag University, commended the pioneering role played by Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development, referring to the Foundation’s previous contributions in supporting several units at Sohag University Hospitals, including the Pediatric Critical Care Department, the Dialysis Unit, the Intensive Care Unit, and the Liver and Gastroenterology Unit. He added that the current support—represented by equipping the neonatal and intensive care wing at the New University Children’s Hospital—will contribute to equipping 19 incubators with their full requirements and 34 ICU beds in the intensive care unit. This support crowns the Foundation’s efforts and will result in the official opening of the hospital as the only specialized children’s hospital in Upper Egypt, equipped with the most advanced medical devices.

Prof. Mohamed Hussein Mahmoud, President of Tanta University, expressed his appreciation for charitable work, particularly the role played by Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development in developing the medical sector. He thanked the Foundation for its contributions in upgrading Tanta University Teaching Hospitals and the New Surgical Hospital, which together represent the largest medical destination in the Delta for many patients. He noted that Tanta University Hospitals receive an average of 3 million cases annually, perform around 6,000 endoscopic procedures per year, operate a cardiac catheterization unit conducting 400 cases annually, include 18 operating rooms performing all types of precise and specialized surgeries across all disciplines at a rate of 3,000 cases annually, and house a specialized radiology department providing all types of imaging services to approximately 40,000 cases annually.

Prof. Mohamed Hantirah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of University Hospitals at Tanta University, indicated that Tanta University Hospitals receive 74,238 patients at outpatient clinics, 33,458 patients at special units, 6,282 inpatient cases, 6,334 intensive care cases, 225 children in neonatal incubators, and 6,339 dialysis sessions annually, in addition to serving 22,828 cases annually under the state-funded treatment system.

Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development continues to support health and education projects to contribute to the advancement of Egyptian society. The Foundation also works to strengthen cooperation with development partners from governmental and non-governmental institutions and civil society organizations to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
